Big Congratulations to Dr. Khalid Arif and Leon Ripa for the 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 – 𝐌2𝐕𝐈𝐏.

Paper titled “Orchard Yield Estimation Using Multi-Angle Image Processing”, authored by Leon Ripa and Khalid Arif has received the best paper award at the IEEE 28th International Conference on Mechatronics and Machine Vision in Practice (M2VIP 2022). This paper is related to the work on #robotics and #machinevision (#deeplearning). For this particular project, funded by the NZ Product Accelerator, Dr Khalid Arif’s team is developing a hexa-copter mounted vision system for counting kiwifruits in an orchard. The hexa-copter is flown under the canopy to acquire images of #kiwifruit. The acquired images are processed on an NVIDIA Jetson Nano.

Leon is studying for his Master of Engineering in Mechatronics under my supervision. He also completed his BE(hons) in Mechatronics at Massey University Auckland and worked with me on his individual research project. The video shows Leon flying the hexa-copter used in his research and also gives a glimpse of how the system works in real time.
